NORTHFIELD, MINN. – Wartburg College gave once-beaten and top-five regionally ranked St. Olaf all it could handle in a hard-fought 2-1 extra session loss Sept. 21.
Coach Sara Johnson’s team, slipping to 4-3, warded off a 12-9 shots disadvantage by evening the contest at 1-1 in the 59th minute. Junior midfielder Katy Wendt (Bettendorf) continued her strong start with her ninth goal. The two sides played over six minutes into the overtime period before the Oles scored the winner.
Junior goalkeeper Haley Hergert (Amana), in her second start, picked up three saves. Other highlights for the Knights included four shot attempts from Wendt and three from freshman forward Anna Aquino (Bettendorf).
Notes – The Orange and Black begin the 2010 Iowa Conference slate with a match at Cornell College in Mount Vernon Saturday, Sept. 25. Match time is 3 p.m.
