Day two of the St. Mary’s University of Winona, Minn., Sugarloaf Classic saw another split for Wartburg. The Knights toppled Iowa Conference rival Luther in four and then dropped a four-game decision to St. Catherine’s College of Minnesota to close the tourney at 2-2.
Head coach Jennifer Walker’s squad fired on all cylinders in the win over the Norse. Three players (sophomore outside hitter Britlyn Sieck of West Union, freshman middle hitter Kelly Niemann of Fredericksburg and junior middle hitter Kamille Van Natta of Readlyn) all ended with 10-or-more kills. Sieck topped the trio with 17. Junior libero Nicole Beer of Boone turned in 26 digs, and freshmen Abby Breitbach of Jesup and Ramey Sieck of West Union combined for 43 assists.
Britlyn Sieck came back with 14 kills in the loss to St. Kate’s. Van Natta added nine kills, three service aces, 23 digs, one solo block and two block assists.
More notes – Sieck's Saturday play was part of an all-tournament weekend. She finished with a team-best 57 kills as well as 36 digs in four matches. She also had a strong .211 individual attack percentage. ... Another busy week is ahead for the Orange and Black. Iowa Conference play opens Wednesday, Sept. 8, with a 7:30 match-up against defending champion Simpson at Indianola. … Next weekend, Walker’s squad hosts a two-day invitational Sept. 10 and 11.
