Trio leads Knights against Luther

WAVERLY – Wartburg College hit 51.1 percent from the field and out-rebounded visiting Luther 33-24 to highlight a hard-fought 83-76 loss Jan. 17.

The Knights, dipping to 6-9 overall and 1-6 in Iowa Conference play, jumped out to a 16-8 lead on the league leaders and held it right through the midway mark of the first half. The Norse (10-5, 7-0) used a 13-7 run over the last 5:27 of the half to lead 37-32 at the break. Luther increased the edge to as much as 12 (60-48) before Coach Dick Peth’s team whittled it down to four in the closing moments but couldn’t get any closer.

Wartburg received strong scoring nights from junior forwards Cole Danielson (Marshalltown)and Jordan Sathoff (Packwood) as well as freshman forward Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls). Danielson earned his fifth 20-points-plus game over the last six with 24, while Sathoff turned in 20. Diemer finished with 15 and a co-team-high seven rebounds. Junior forward Kirk Sidey (Greenfield) finished with seven rebounds and five assists.

The Orange and Black continue conference play with an 8 p.m. tipoff at Simpson College’s Cowles Fieldhouse in Indianola Wednesday, Jan. 19.

NOTES – Danielson’s seven-game double-figure scoring run has seen his scoring average rise nearly three points (15.6-18.5). … Sathoff’s numbers are just as impressive. He’s been over 20 points in three of his last four contests. … Diemer’s double-figure game was his third of the season.
