INDIANOLA – Despite an 84-71 Iowa Conference loss at the hands of Simpson College Jan. 19, Wartburg College junior forward
Jordan Sathoff (Packwood) had a night to remember.
He went 13-of-24 from the field, canned seven-of-11 free throw tries, and was perfect from outside the arc (one-for-one) for a 34-point night. Sathoff also pulled down 14 boards to lead Coach Dick Peth’s squad (6-10 overall, 1-7 IIAC). He and fellow junior forward Cole Danielson (Marshalltown) went one-two in scoring with Danielson tallying 15 points thanks to three-pointers. Kirk Sidey (Greenfield), also a junior forward, was just out of double figures with eight points and also added eight rebounds.
Wartburg kept it close and even led during the early stages inside Cowles Fieldhouse. However, a 10-2 Storm run that began at the 16:52 mark of the first half gave the home team a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Despite trailing by as much as 17 in the second half, Peth’s squad scratched and clawed its way back, pulling within two (67-65) after freshman guard Thomas Perkins of Sun Valley, Nevada canned a three-pointer with just under four minutes to go. A quick seven-point stretch from Simpson (8-9, 5-3 IIAC) enough breathing room for the remainder.
The Knights begin the second half of the 2010-11 IIAC slate with a 4 p.m tipoff against Coe College of Cedar Rapids Saturday, Jan. 22, inside Levick Arena.
NOTES – Sathoff’s evening was the highest point-total for a Wartburg player since Mitch Eslick scored 37 against Grinnell in November of 2007. It was his fourth double-double of the year. … Danielson’s three treys marked the 11th time this year he’s done so in a game while his double-figure scoring streak marched to eight straight games.
