#9 Knights Claim Second IIAC Title in Four Years

Box Score
WAVERLY, Iowa—The ninth-ranked Wartburg women’s soccer team (15-1-2 overall, 7-0-1 IIAC) won a share of the Iowa Conference regular-season Championship with its 5-0 win over IIAC opponent, Buena Vista (8-10-1, 1-7-0) Wednesday night.

This marked the Knights’ second conference title in four years and second regular-season crown in program history.
“(Winning the title) is very exciting and I’m extremely proud of the team,” said head coach Tiffany Pins. “We pushed them hard this season and set high expectations and they rose to the challenge.”

This is the first season Coach Pins is at the helm of the program and is a 2005 graduate of Wartburg. “This is a very proud moment for me (being able to win a conference title at my alma mater),” she said. “I believed in this program as a player, as an assistant coach and now as the head coach.

“This title helps contribute to the building blocks of establishing a strong tradition of winning Conference Championships,” she continued.

Fittingly, this win occurred on the annual Senior Day as the women’s soccer class of 2012 were members of the 2008 regular-season Conference Championship team as well.

“(Being a member of the 2008 squad) was a great start to my career here at Wartburg,” said senior forward Katy Wendt (Bettendorf). “I remember the feeling of sheer joy my first year and it is a great feeling to return to this excitement.

“It feels really special to win another title as a senior with my fellow senior teammates,” she continued. “We’ve been through a lot together with injuries and coaching changes and to (win another title) together on our last time around is special.”

Sophomore Lauren Bauer (La Porte City) put the Orange and Black on the board at 10:31 as she headed a pass from classmate Cathy Reiter (Buckingham) into the bottom right corner of the net.

Senior Chelsea Frye (Waverly) scored her team-best 14th goal of the year on a pass from sophomore Anna Aquino (Bettendorf) at 17:18.

Aquino scored two minutes later on her corner kick attempt to give the Knights the 3-0 advantage.

Senior Taylor Vermie (Cedar Rapids) scored on sophomore Taylor Shaw’s (Ely) pass to give Wartburg the 4-0 lead in the 35th minute.

Sophomore Kelli Anderson (Cary, Ill.) put Wendt’s pass into the back of the net at 64:17 for the final goal.

Classmate Monica Noti (Carol Stream, Ill.) recorded her eighth shutout win of the year.

The Orange and Black are the No. 2  seed for the Iowa Conference Tournament that starts Saturday, but receives a first-round bye.

The Knights will play Tuesday, Nov. 1. Complete game information to be posted when it becomes available.
