Knights Shutout Storm, Wendt Ties Single-Game Record

WAVERLY, Iowa—The ninth-ranked Wartburg women’s soccer team (16-1-2 overall) defeated Simpson 6-0 in the second round of the Iowa Conference tournament Wednesday night.

Senior Katy Wendt (Bettendorf) tied the program’s single-game record as she tallied four assists on the night.

Fellow Bettendorf native, sophomore Anna Aquino, put the Knights on the board just 1:48 into the game as Wendt fed her the ball.

Sophomore Kelli Anderson (Cary, Ill.) extended the lead to two as she connected on a pass from Wendt at 8:37. Junior Kaylee Benning (Waverly) was also credited on the assist.

The next two goals were scored by senior Chelsea Frye (Waverly) at 10:01 and 33:05 to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Orange and Black. Wendt had the assists on both goals.

Sophomore Taylor Shaw (Ely) connected on a pass from senior Taylor Vermie (Cedar Rapids) at 34:42 to give Wartburg the 5-0 lead.

Vermie later capitalized on a saved shot attempt from junior Cathy Reiter (Buckingham) for the final goal of the game at 75:47.

Sophomore Monica Noti (Carol Stream) recorded her ninth shutout win of the season in net.

With her four points on the night, Wendt has now surpassed the century mark for her career and has 103 points to date.

With the win, Wartburg advances to the IIAC Tournament Championship game Saturday against top-seeded Loras in Dubuque. Game time is yet to be announced.
