Football Travels to Face Duhawks

WAVERLY, Iowa-- Wartburg (6-2 overall,  4-2 IIAC) travels to Dubuque, Iowa to face Iowa Conference opponent, Loras (1-7, 0-6) Saturday at 1 p.m.

A Look Back at Last Week:
Wartburg defeated Central 20-13 last week as the Dutch's final pass play on Wartburg's four-yard line fell incomplete to give the Knights the win.

Senior quarterback Dan Stiefel (Sterling Heights, Mich.) threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns as he was 20-35 with no interceptions.

Classmate Levi Helbling (Malvern) led the receivers with 88 yards. Freshman Donald Miller (Maywood, Ill.) finished with three caches for 48 yards and junior Curt Hruska (New Hampton) had seven catches for 79 yards.

The Knights were held to 36 yards on the ground as Stiefel had a team-best 19 yards.

Sophomore Ryan Billings (Sterling, Ill.) led the defense with his 14 total tackles (nine solo, ten assist) and junior Jason Shupp (Cedar Rapids) had 11 solo and three assists.

Wartburg’s defense held Central’s signal caller, Nate Snead, to just 86 yards through the air.

Loras fell 19-17 to Cornell last weekend. Individually, Sean Brennan finished the day 14-for-21 for 261 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Devin Kass ran the ball 24 times for 89 yards. Gavin Kaiser finished with eight catches for 154 yards and both touchdown receptions. Bryce Ewan caught four passes for 89 yards. 

Eric Meyer had 13 tackles, including a game-high 10 solo efforts to go with his forced fumble.

Wartburg ranks in the Top 100 in 11 NCAA National Statistical Categories as of games played through October 29 in Division III. The Knights are 18th in sacks allowed (.75/gm), 31st in net punting (34.61), 42nd in sacks (2.63/gm), 52nd in tackles for loss (7.38/gm), 65th in passing offense (231/gm), 67th in scoring offense (29.88/gm), 76th in passing efficiency (133.53), 77th in turnover margin (.38), 81st in total offense (381 yards/gm), 87th in scoring defense (21.63 points/gm) and 91st in rushing defense (142.38 yards/gm).
 
Individually, nine players are ranked in the Top 100 in nine different categories. J Shupp is ranked 9th in tackles (12.14/gm), Robby Salmon is ranked 9th in net punting (41.63 yards/kick), Helbling is 34th in receiving yards per game (91.83), Shupp is tied for 45th in sacks, (.79/gm) and tied for 54th in tackles for loss (1.57/gm). Steifel ranks 56th in total offense (238.62/gm), 79th in passing efficiency (133.245) and Connor Dahlstrom ranks 98th in rushing (81.14 yards/gm).

Against IIAC Opponents:
As a team, Wartburg ranks in the Top Five among Iowa Conference opponents: leads the conference in punting (34.8 yds/punt), red-zone offense (19-21) and red-zone defense (15-23), ranks 2nd in scoring defense (20.7 pts/game), 3rd in rushing defense (142.0 yds/game), 4th in scoring offense (29.7 pts/game), rushing offense (155.5 yds/game) and total defense (379.2 yds/game), 5th in total offense (377.0 yards/game), passing offense (221.5 yds/game), passing defense (237.2 yds/game) and passing efficiency (130.0).

There are a number of Knights that rank among the conference's individual leaders. Dahlstrom is the IIAC's second-leading rusher (90.4 yds/game), Stiefel is 5th among all signal callers (216.8 yds/game) and sixth in passing efficiency (129.5).

Two receivers, Helbling and Hruska rank in the Top 10 in conference leaders in receiving yards per game as Helbling is third (82.8) and Hruska is ninth (59.8).

Salmon leads the IIAC in punting with his 41.3 yds/punt average and Shupp is the conference's second-leading tackler with 12.2 tackles/game and fourth in sacks (0.67/game) and tackles for loss (1.33). Garrett McGrane is tenth in tackles (9.0) and Riley Anderson leads the conference with his 1.60 passes defended/game.

Next Games:
Wartburg concludes its regular-season next weekend on the road against Luther in Decorah. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
