DUBUQUE, Iowa—Wartburg defeated Loras 24-13 Saturday to move to 7-2 overall and 5-2 against Iowa Conference opponents.
Senior Marcus Williams (Council Bluffs) made a career-high three field goals on the day.
Junior Connor Dahlstrom (Eldridge) put the Knights on the board with his two-yard run just under five minutes into the game.
Sophomore Andrew Putz (Ankeny) would double Wartburg’s lead with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter as junior Garrett McGrane (Fairbank) blocked Loras’ punt and Putz ran it in from 12-yards out.
The Duhawks did not score until late in the second quarter as Andy Brown caught a three-yard pass from Sean Brennan to make the score 14-7 at halftime.
Three consecutive field goals by Williams made the score 23-7 with just over four minutes remaining. He made successful kicks from distances of 22, 23 and 19 yards, respectively.
Loras would score its final touchdown a minute and a half later as Brown made his second touchdown reception of the day, this one a 16-yard catch from Brennan.
The Knights recovered the Duhawks’ on-side kick attempt with 2:55 remaining.
Sophomore Reese Thompson (VanHorne) led Wartburg on the ground with his 93-yards on 22 carries.
Dahlstrom was the next leading rusher with his 12 carries for 42 yards and one touchdown.
Senior quarterback Dan Stiefel (Sterling Heights, Mich.) threw for 235 yards and was 17-26 with no interceptions.
Classmate Levi Helbling (Malvern) led the receiving group with his 76 yards on six receptions. Sophomore Donald Miller (Maywood, Ill.) also had six catches for 67 yards.
Senior Robby Salmon (Mason City) had two punts on the day for an average of 47.0 yards/punt.
Senior David Brooks (Bettendorf) had a career-high ten solo tackles to lead all defenders with 14 total tackles on the day. Junior Mark Lueschow (Cresco) joined him in double-digit tackles with ten.
Wartburg travels to Decorah next week for its regular-season finale against Luther. Kickoff is slated for noon.
