WAVERLY - A 44-32 second half roll helped guide Wartburg College to an 83-78 win over Simpson Feb. 12. The victory, closing the Orange and Black’s season in Levick Arena, moved them within two games of the sixth and final spot in the 2011 Iowa Conference postseason tournament.
A 13-3 run in the latter stages of the second half fueled a strong comeback for Coach Dick Peth’s team (9-13, 4-10 IIAC). Wartburg trailed 62-56 with 8:57 to go and came out of the run with a 69-65 advantage with 5:48 left. Simpson (9-13, 6-8 IIAC) closed to within two at one stage but got no closer down the stretch.
The junior forward duo of Jordan Sathoff (Packwood) and Cole Danielson (Marshalltown) topped the scoring chart. Sathoff produced his second 30-point-plus game of the year with 30 to go with four rebounds. He was also a perfect three-for-three from outside the arc. Danielson tossed in 19, and junior center Austin Donnelly (Fort Collins, Colo.), added 10. Junior forward Kirk Sidey (Greenfield) was just shy of a rare triple-double with nine points, eight rebounds and 10 assists.
The Orange and Black continues conference play on Wednesday, Feb. 16, in Dubuque versus the University of Dubuque Spartans. Tip-off is at 8 p.m.
NOTES: Sathoff’s 30-point night moved him into Wartburg’s 1000-point club as the 29th member. His double-figure scoring streak increased to 11 straight. … Danielson’s double-digit string is at 14 in a row. … Sidey’s 10 assists were the most in a game for a Knights player since last January against Simpson in the same arena when sophomore guard Mitchell Murphy of Cresco dished out 10.
