75th anniversary celebration commemorative program

WAVERLY – The present of Wartburg College men’s basketball gave its predecessors a “welcome home” gift Feb. 5.

Coach Dick Peth’s Knights, moving to 8-13 overall and 3-10 in the Iowa Conference, limited a usually strong-shooting Buena Vista to less than 40 percent from the field (28 of 68 – 36.8) and below 20 percent from outside the arc (four for 25 – 16 percent) during a 65-62 win. The victory, witnessed by a crowd of better than 1800 inside Levick Arena, helped spotlight the program’s 75th anniversary celebration weekend.

Wartburg rolled out to a 16-9 lead less than nine minutes in. Buena Vista (8-12, 5-6 IIAC) battled back and leveled the score twice (22-22 and 24-24) before the Orange and Black took off on a 13-5 run to close the half with a 37-29 edge. The Knights extended the margin to as much as 15 in the second stanza and fought off another Beavers’ charge in the waning moments.

The junior forward trio of Jordan Sathoff of Packwood, Cole Danielson of Marshalltown, and Kirk Sidey of Greenfield continued to guide Wartburg. Sathoff recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds to go with three blocked shots, while Danielson totaled 15 points. Sidey finished with 14 points and three assists.

Wartburg continues the second half of the league schedule Saturday, Feb. 12, hosting Simpson. Tip-off is 4 p.m. inside Levick Arena.

NOTES – Sathoff continued his recent torrid pace. He recorded his fourth double-double in the last six games and upped his double-figure scoring string to 10 straight. … Danielson’s double-figure streak reached 13 games in a row.
