WAVERLY – Buoyed by a 26-hit, 24-run attack, Wartburg College picked up a pair of non-conference wins over Grinnell March 30.
The Knights (8-13) opened the twinbill with a 9-1 win. The sophomore pitching duo of Samantha Kuntzelman (Leaf River, Ill.), and Janelle Schneiderman (West Burlington) combined for eight strikeouts and surrendered only one earned run. The offense was topped by a pair of two-run shots to left field off the bat of junior catcher Emily Braem (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), as part of a four-for-four, five-RBI game. Sophomore infielder Stacey Kayser (Jesup) also finished with three hits.
It was more of the same for Coach Kara Kehe’s team in the nightcap. After the Pioneers (0-12) got out of the gate fast with three runs in the first for a quick lead, Wartburg posted back-to-back four-run frames in the second and third and seven in the fourth to break the game open towards a 15-5 win. Braem came back with two hits and three RBIs, while junior outfielder Lynn Heitkamp (Galena, Ill.), added two hits and two RBIs, and Kuntzelman scored three times.
The Orange and Black continue their 2011 slate with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Central College of Pella’s campus field Saturday, April 2. It’s the Iowa Conference opener for both schools.
NOTES: Kehe’s team has won five of its last seven going into the weekend. … The home sweep was the first for the Knights since April 9, 2009. … Heitkamp’s two two-hit games were her ninth and 10th multiple hit efforts of the season which leads the squad. She also did so against the Pioneers at Grinnell in 2009.
