Wartburg gains league win

Boxscores - Game one/game two

WAVERLY – A seven-run second inning rally keyed an Iowa Conference split for Wartburg College April 23.

The Knights (9-24, 1-11 IIAC) snapped a 10-game skid with a 9-8 game one win over the University of Dubuque at Lynes Field. Coach Kara Kehe’s Knights benefited from three RBIs and a double from junior Lynn Heitkamp (Galena, Ill.), two hits apiece from junior Lauren Popov (Collinsville, Ill.), and sophomore Samantha Kuntzelman (Leaf River, Ill.), along with two RBIs from sophomore Ashley Bienemann (Alburnett).

Dubuque (16-15, 4-6 IIAC) tried to rally from the early 8-2 deficit, trimming the disadvantage to one run in the top of the seventh before the Orange and Black defense threw out a runner trying to move into scoring position for the final out. The visitors garnered a split with a 13-4, six-inning decision in game two, despite a three-run double off the bat of Heitkamp.

The Orange and Black continue league play Wednesday, April 27, at Buena Vista. First pitch at Storm Lake High School is 3 p.m.

NOTES – Heitkamp’s two-hit outing in game two was her 15th multiple-hit game of the year. She also added her fifth and sixth multiple-RBI contests. … Popov’s batting average rose 34 points (.239-.263) during the afternoon.
