Coe topples Knights

Boxscores - Game one/game two

WAVERLY – Wartburg College flirted with a pair of scoring opportunities April 9, but visiting Coe kept the home team off the scoreboard at Lynes Field en route to 6-0 and 9-0 wins.

The Knights, dropping to 8-19 overall and 0-6 in Iowa Conference play, loaded the bases in the home half of the fourth inning of the opener behind singles from junior Lauren Popov (Collinsville, Ill.), and senior Jacie Smith (Victor). A fielder’s choice ended the rally. The same inning nearly registered some offense in game two behind a single from junior outfielder Lynn Heitkamp (Galena, Ill.), and double to the gap in left center for junior catcher Emily Braem (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) However, a foul out and strikeout cooled the threat.

On the mound, sophomore Janelle Schneiderman (West Burlington) hurled five and two thirds impressive frames out of the bullpen in game one. She blanked the Kohawks (22-5, 5-1) on four hits and struck out five.

Coach Kara Kehe’s squad opens a four-game league road trip Wednesday, April 13, at Luther College in Decorah. First pitch is 3 p.m.

NOTES – Schneidermann’s game one pitching effort dropped her season earned run average better than one point (6.92-5.8). Her five strikeouts equaled a personal single-game high achieved against Grinnell March 30. … Popov, with hits in each game, stretched her current hit streak to four.
