No. 13 Wartburg Opens Iowa Conference Schedule Saturday

WAVERLY, Iowa -- Thirteenth-ranked Wartburg (2-0 overall) continues its three-game homestand and begins the Iowa Conference portion of its schedule as it hosts Buena Vista (0-2) Saturday. The homestring concludes next week when the Coe Kohawks travels to Waverly.

At Home:
The Orange and Black are 43-9 in the Walston-Hoover Stadium era since it opened in 2001. In that same time, the Knights are 7-3 in conference openers and bring a streak of five straight IIAC opener wins into today’s game.

The Series in the Walston-Hoover Era:
Wartburg owns the series lead since 2001, when Walston-Hoover Stadium opened at 7-3 and is 4-1 on its home turf.

A Look Back at Last Week:
Then- 14th ranked Wartburg College football team moved to 2-0 on the year as it overcame a 14-0 deficit to defeat non-conference opponent, Gustavus Adolphus 26-21 last Saturday night.

The Knights moved to 7-0 in their home openers under the lights in the Walston-Hoover era (since 2001). Saturday marked the kickoff of the 10th year anniversary celebration of the stadium.

Senior Danny Stiefel (Sterling Heights, Mich.) threw for 253 yards which brought the streak to 44 consecutive games that a Wartburg quarterback has thrown for triple digits.

Junior Curt Hruska (New Hampton) led the receiving group with his six receptions for 105 yards and had two touchdown catches. Sophomore Logan Ruffridge (Cedar Rapids) also had six receptions for 77 yards.

Junior Connor Dahlstrom (Eldridge) led the Orange and Black on the ground with his 29 carries for 82 yards.

Where Wartburg Ranks in NCAA Stat Categories:
As a team, the Knights are 27th in sacks, 42nd in passing offense, 58th in passing efficiency, 59th in net punting, 62nd in total offense, 69th in punt returns and 71st in scoring defense and tackles for loss.

Senior punter Robby Salmon (Mason City) is 15th among all individuals in punting while classmate Marcus Williams (Council Bluffs) is tied for 35th in field goals.

Senior Matt Tschetter (Milford) is tied for 46th in sacks.

Classmate Dan Stiefel (Sterling Heights, Mich.) is 47th in total offense and 50th in passing efficiency.

A Look at Buena Vista:
Buena Vista hosted Concordia-Moorhead in its home opener last week. The Cobbers built a 21-0 lead late in the third quarter before the Beavers rallied back to 21-14 early in the fourth quarter, but the Cobbers went on to post back-to-back touchdowns midway through the final frame to hang on and top the Beavers, 35-14, on Saturday afternoon inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.

Freshman quarterback Bobby Brown threw for a career-high 182 yards and one touchdown for BVU.

The Beavers return 15 starters from a squad that finished 3-7 overall and 2-6 in the IIAC last season.

In the Polls:
The Orange and Black moved up in the d3football.com Top 25 poll for the second straight week as they received the No. 13 spot in the week two poll released Sept. 11.
