Knights Fall to BV

Mitchell Murphy tied his career-high with nine assists Wednesday.

WAVERLY, Iowa—The Wartburg men’s basketball team (8-11 overall, 2-8 IIAC) fell 83-77 to Iowa Conference opponent, Buena Vista (10-8, 6-3) Wednesday night.

Three Knights finished with double digits as senior Jordan Sathoff (Packwood) led the team with 15 points. He also moved into fourth on the program’s career-leader list with 1,414 points to date and needs 37 points to take third, which is currently held by assistant coach Jason Steege.

Classmate Darian Patterson (West Chester) and sophomore Mitchell Murphy (Cresco) each tallied 13 on the game.
Murphy tied his career mark with nine assists.

Senior Kirk Sidey (Greenfield) and sophomore Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls) co-led the team on the glass as each pulled down six rebounds.

BV was led by 20 points from Wed Nordquist. Jeff Janssen and Doug Bissen each tallied 17 points and Michael Kaufmann completed the leading scorers with his 11 points.

Bissen narrowly missed a double-double with his game-high nine rebounds.

The score remained close in the first half and was tied 34-34 at halftime.

The Beavers opened the second frame on an 11-3 run over the first four minutes to take the 45-37 lead.

The Knights cut the lead to three with 8:12 remaining until BV pushed the lead to ten (72-62) with just under six minutes to go.

The Orange and Black made a three-pointer with 1:25 left to pull within seven. Wartburg then quickly fouled to get the ball back. After a Knights missed free throw attempt, the Beavers missed a three-point attempt to give the Knights the ball with 26 seconds remaining.

Patterson made a layup with 20 seconds left to come within six (83-77). Murphy recorded his second steal of the night with 10 seconds to go, but the Orange and Black missed its last-second three point attempt to give BV the win.

Wartburg returns to the court Saturday against Luther at 4 p.m. The 25th Anniversary of the 1986-87 men’s Elite Eight team will be recognized at halftime.
