CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- The No. 11 ranked Wartburg volleyball team (26-5 overall, 7-0 IIAC) claimed its second regular-season Iowa Conference Championship in program history with its 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) sweep over Coe Wednesday night.
The Knights won their first regular-season title in 2002.
With tonight's win, the Orange and Black are the top seed for the Iowa Conference tournament and receive a first-round bye.
Senior Britlyn Sieck (Fayette) led the team with her 14 kills and impressive .417 hitting percentage on the night. The sweep and conference title win was even more exciting for her as today is her birthday.
"I'm so happy for her as this is how she plays all the time and I wanted her to have another great night," said head coach Jennifer Walker. "Winning the regular-season title is something we haven't done in a long time and she is a big part of why we won (the conference title)."
Junior Maddie Forsyth (Charles City) joined her in double digits with 10 kills.
Classmate Ramey Sieck (Fayette) had 28 set assists as she ran the team's offense and junior Marissa Shinstine (Tripoli) had a match-high 13 digs.
As a team, Wartburg held the team advantages in kills (43-25), service aces (4-2), digs (49-40). The Knights' defense held Coe to a .031 hitting percentage on the night.
"Our defense set the tone," said Walker. "Our serves took Coe out of their offense, especially in the second set, and as a result, they weren't able to have a lot of hard shots.
"Our defense did an excellent job of reading the hitters," she continued.
The Orange and Black return to competition this weekend at Augustana's (Ill.) Pumpkin Bash.
