Benning's Hat Trick Propels #18 Wartburg Past Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa-- Senior Kaylee Benning (Waverly) recorded a hat trick with her career-high three goals in Wartburg's 5-1 win over Iowa Conference opponent, Simpson, Thursday night.

"Today's game was a great team effort," said head coach Tiffany Pins. "Kaylee did a wonderful job of finishing her opportunities in front of the goal."

With the win, the Knights move to 8-2-1 on the year and 2-0-0 in conference play. The Storm fell to 7-4-0, 1-1-0 on the season.

Benning started her scoring frenzy early with her goal just 1:42 into the game. She connected on a corner kick from junior Anna Aquino (Bettendorf).

Classmate Rachel Torry (Urbandale) scored just eight minutes later on a pass from Rachel Torry (Cary, Ill.) from about seven-yards out.

Benning netted her second goal at 33:57 to give the Orange and Black the 3-0 lead at halftime.

Aquino helped Wartburg extend its margin with her goal at 60:13. Senior Cathy Reiter (Buckingham) was credited with the assist.

Simpson's Amber Johnson scored their lone goal of the day at 71:40 while Benning completed her day with a goal at 78:51. Sophomore Ashley Frush (La Porte City) was credited with the assist.

As a team, the Knights held the advantage in shots at 17-1 and corner kicks at 3-1.

The Orange and Black return to the field Saturday when they host IIAC opponent, Coe at 5 p.m.
