WAVERLY, Iowa -- Wartburg College made NCAA history Saturday as the Knights won two NCAA National Championships in two different sports (women's indoor track and field and wrestling) on the same day on March 10, 2012. No other school in any of the three NCAA divisions has ever accomplished this.
The only other school to win two titles on the same day in the same sport was the University of St. Thomas (NCAA Division III) as it swept the women's and men's cross country championships in 1984 and 1986.
"What a great weekend for Wartburg College and our athletic department," said Wartburg's Athletic Director, Rick Willis. "Our student-athletes competed at a very high level with extraordinary poise and confidence, while representing Wartburg exceptionally well. These results are a tribute to the outstanding commitment, preparation, and work of talented student-athletes, athletic trainers and coaches."
Other notes from the weekend:
- The Knights had 23 student-athletes compete in both Championships on the weekend and earned a combined total of 23 All-American honors, which includes two All-American relays.
- Every single one of the women's track competitors (13) earned at least one All-American honor.
- Women's track broke the Championship record with their 99 total team points. The old mark stood at 66 points set by the women of Christopher Newport in 1988.
- In women's track and wrestling combined, the Knights won a combined eight individual National Championships.
- Unrelated to these two teams, sophomore Jonas Elusme's also won the men's long jump.
- Wartburg swept the long jump event with Elusme's and senior
Skye Morrison's (Maywood, Ill.) victory.
- Senior
Nevada Morrison (Maywood, Ill.) concluded her indoor track career as a four-time member of a National Championship 4x400m relay team.
- The Morrison twins also accomplished their goal of winning individual National Championships at the same meet with Nevada's win in the 400m dash and Skye's long jump title.
- This marked women's track third National title in the last four years.
- Head Coach,
Marcus Newsom, was named the USTFCCCA Central Region Women's Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his tenure at Wartburg.
- Women's assistant coach, Steve Johnson, was named the USTFCCCA Central Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.
- The Morrison twins were named the USTFCCCA Central Region Athletes of the Year as Nevada was recognized for track events and Skye for the field events.
- Wrestling finished with the Championships fourth-best team score ever of 141.5 points.
- Wrestling's four individual Championships tied the NCAA meet record, which Wartburg set in 2003.
- Senior
Byron Tate (Clinton) became only the 12th wrestler in NCAA history to become a three-time National Champion.
- Junior
Kodie Silvestri (Franklin, N.J.) was named the NWCA Most Outstanding Wrestler, marking the first time that a Knight had recieved this honor.
- Wrestling had a competitor in each of the ten (10) weight classes and eight of those student-athletes earned All-American honors.
- This marked wrestling's ninth National title in program history and second consecutive as they stood atop the team podium last season as well.
