WAVERLY, Iowa— The Wartburg softball team was swept by Iowa Conference opponent, Buena Vista, Saturday, 5-3 and 12-5.
The first game was scoreless until the fourth when the Knights put two runs on the scoreboard. Freshman Katie Canney (Adel) hit a leadoff double and then later scored on junior Ashley Bienemann’s (Alburnet) fielder’s choice. The next batter, senior Emily Braem (Glyn Ellen, Ill.) drove in Bienemann on her double.
BV evened the score on a two-run homer in the top of the fifth and plated an additional two runs to take the 4-2 lead.
The Orange and Black brought the game within one as senior Lynn Heitkamp (Galena, Ill.) scored on freshman Alex Becker’s (Gilbertville) RBI single.
The Beavers plated their final run of the game in the sixth on an RBI double.
Heitkamp went 2-4 in the game and Becker finished 2-3.
In the final game of the twinbill, BV took the 2-0 lead in the first and extended its margin to 4-0 in the third.
Wartburg tallied two in the fourth as Canney slugged a two-run homer.
The Beavers plated one in the fifth and four in the sixth to take the 9-2 lead.
In their sixth inning, the Knights scored two to make the score 9-4.
Buena Vista used a three-run seventh inning to extend its margin once again.
The Orange and Black compiled a late rally as Heitkamp drove in classmate Lauren Popov (Collinsville, Ill.) on her RBI double.
Heitkamp led the team as she went 3-4 in the game.
Wartburg returns to the field Tuesday in its final home game of the season against Luther at 4 p.m.
