Wartburg Defeats Carthage on the Road, 27-3

KENOSHA, Wis.-- The Wartburg football team improved to 2-1 on the year with its 27-3 win over Carthage College Saturday.

Senior Reese Thompson (Van Horne) helped the Knights capitalize on their first drive of the game with his ten-yard run at 11:25.

Freshman Frank Loconti (Glenbard, Ill.) made a 20-yard field goal on the team's ensuing drive to increase the margin to ten (10-0) with 2:09 left in the first.

Brett Bukari answered with his 29-yard field goal for the Red Men to make the score 10-3 just into the second quarter (14:56).

Freshman Logan Schrader (Kildeer, Ill.) threw a one-yard touchdown pass to senior Curt Hruska (New Hampton) with ten seconds left in the first half to pull ahead 17-3.

Thompson tied his career high with his second touchdown of the game, this one from one-yard out, with 10:36 to play in the third quarter. This made the score 24-3.

Loconti made his second field goal of the day, this one for 22-yards with 8:08 remaining in the game. He accounted for eight points with this field goal and two PATs.

Schrader finished 21-30 with 209 yards.

Thompson led the attack on the ground with his first 100-yard game of the season with 119 yards on the day.

Sophomore Donald Miller (Maywood, Ill.) led all receivers with six catches for 76 yards.

Junior Jared Wauters (Elberon) led the defense with his 7.0 total tackles as all of them were unassisted.

Classmate Joey Naig (Emmetsburg) had a team-best 3.0 tackles for a loss of 12 yards including 1.5 sacks for 11 yards.

The Orange and Black are off from competition next week, but return to the gridiron Saturday, Sept. 29 against Simpson to open the Iowa Conference portion of their schedule.
