WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg men's basketball team (7-5 overall, 2-0 IIAC) snapped a seven-game losing skid to Iowa Conference opponent Central (7-5, 0-2) in its 86-78 win Wednesday night.
The Knights compiled a strong first-half and took the 47-30 lead at halftime.
The Dutch was able to chip the margin to single digits (83-74) with 33 seconds remaining as they fouled down the stretch.
Two successful free throws by senior Mitchell Murphy (Cresco) built the lead to 10 (85-75) with 29 seconds to play.
Central came within seven points on a three-point basket with 0:23 left but Murphy made his free throw attempt and the Dutch were unable to run another play as time expired.
Junior Brett Ahlgren (LeClaire) led all scorers with a career-best 16 points. Seniors Jake Reinhardt (Waverly) and Brandon Flenor (Baltimore) joined him in double digits with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Junior Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls) led the team on the glass with 10 rebounds.
Wartburg held the team advantages in all three categories: field goal percentage (.590 vs. .456), three-point field goal percentage (.625 vs. .500) and from the free throw line (.690 vs. .571).
The Knights return to the court Saturday on the road against Simpson at 4 p.m.
