Wartburg Edges Central 16-14 to Remain Atop Conference Standings

WAVERLY, Iowa-- Wartburg moved to 7-2 on the season and 5-1 in Iowa Conference play with its 16-14 win over Central (5-4, 3-3) Saturday.

The Dutch took the early 7-0 lead as they blocked a Knights' punt and scored on the short drive with 8:16 remaining in the first quarter.

The Orange and Black evened the score as they recovered a Central fumble on the 24-yard line as sophomore Brandon Domeyer (Manchester) punched it in from one-yard out with 4:50 left in the frame.

The Dutch answered with a 68-yard scoring drive on their ensuing possesion to take the 14-7 lead with 2:08 left in the first.

In the second quarter, Wartburg's 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked, but the Knights struck on their next possesion sophomore Will Jansen (Mediapolis) made an interception and returned it 37-yards to the Central 13-yard line. After a one-yard gain by sophomore Logan Schrader (Killdeer, Ill.), he ran the ball in from 12-yards out on the next play to bring the score within one point. The wind played a large factor in the game as the extra point kick failed.

The score remained in favor of the Dutch, 14-13 through the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, sophomore Michael Bohlke (Manchester) kicked a 28-yard field goal on the Knights' second drive of the frame to regain the lead at 16-14 with 9:21 remaining.

Each team had two drives in the rest of the quarter as Central got the ball back on its own 30-yard line with seven seconds remaining.

The Dutch attempted to run one final play until senior Ryan Billings (Sterling, Ill.) sealed the win for the Orange and Black as he intercepted the quarterback's pass at Wartburg's 44-yard line.

Schrader finished with 104 yards on the ground and 191 yards through the air.

Junior Donald Miller (Maywood, Ill.) led all receivers with seven catches for 95 yards.

Billings and Jansen co-led the defense with 8.0 tackles each. Senior Joey Naig (Emmetsburg) had a team-high 4.0 tackles for a loss.

Wartburg concludes its regular season next Saturday on the road against Loras at 1 p.m.
