Wartburg Falls to Dubuque in Conference Tournament Championship

DUBUQUE, Iowa-- The Wartburg men's basketball team fell 73-60 to Dubuque in the Iowa Conference Tournament Championship game Sunday.

With the win, Dubuque received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Senior Brandon Flenor (Baltimore, Md.) scored a career-high 20 points to lead the team.

Junior Thomas Perkins (Sun Valley, Nev.) joined him in double figures with 11 points on the day.

"We are very proud of our seniors and the leadership they provided this season," said head coach Dick Peth.

"This team showed the non-believers what can be accomplished with being one unit," he continued.

The Knights were picked to finish last in the preseason conference coaches poll. The Orange and Black opened the conference portion of their schedule 5-0, qualified for the conference tournament for the first time since 2009-10 and advanced to the tournament championship game for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

"The Wartburg basketball family was as close as any team in recent years. They all played each and every game for their teammates. We appreciate the genuine support from everyone.

The Knights were ahead 33-27 at halftime.

The Spartans opened the second frame on a 9-0 run to knot the game at 36 all with 17:52 to play.

Dubuque took the lead for good at 39-38 on a three-point field goal with 16:15 remaining.

The Orange and Black finished 15-12 this season. 

Wartburg defeated Coe 64-54 in the opening round of the tournament before upsetting top-seeded Luther 62-57 to advance to the Tournament Championship game.
