Knights Finish 1-1 on Opening Day

MINNEAPOLIS-- The Wartburg softball team finished 1-1 on opening day as it split its doubleheader against Northwestern College (Minn.) at Augsburg's Tournament.

The Knights fell 5-0 in the opening game but won the second meeting 7-4. Wartburg turned a triple play in the fourth inning as Northwestern's Johnsen hit into a play from ss to 3b to 2b.

In the second game, the Orange and Black jumped on the boad in their first at-bats as they took the early 3-0 lead.

The Eagles scored two in the bottom of the second to bring the margin to one (3-2).

Northwestern knotted the score at three all in the third but Wartburg responded with two runs in its next plate appearance to regain the 5-3 lead.

The Eagles scored their final run in the fifth.

Freshman Savannah Warburton (Altoona) slugged her first collegiate home run which also drove in classmate Abby Staudt (Rockford) in the seventh to seal the win.

Newcomer Kate Shindelar (Eldora) earned her first career win in the circle and sophomore Jena Heise (Iowa City) picked up her first save as a Knight.

The Orange and Black returns to the field Saturday when they face host-Augsburg in a twinbill at 2 p.m.
