WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg football team (2-1 overall) defeated Carthage (1-1) 27-10 Saturday in its home opener.
With the win, the Knights increased their winning streak to 13-0 in home openers in the Walston-Hoover Stadium era, since 2001.
Sophomoer Brandon Domeyer (Manchester) scored his first of two touchdowns on the day on a 24-yard run with 5:27 left in the first quarter.
The RedMen took the 7-6 lead on a 15-yard run by quarterback AJ Simoncelli with 14:19 remaining in the half.
Domeyer helped the Orange and Black regain the lead on their ensuing drive as he punched one in from six-yards out. Classmate Michael Bohlke's (Manchester) extra point kick was good to make the score 13-7 with 8:07 left in the half.
Carthage scored on its next drive on a 35-yard field goal to make the score 13-10 with 4:34 left in the frame.
In the third quarter, Logan Pitz made an interception which led to a 37-yard touchdown reception by senior Taylor Jacobsmeier (Wapello) from sophomore Logan Schrader (Kildeer, Ill.) to extend Wartburg's lead to double digits (20-10).
Junior Donald Miller (Maywood, Ill.) completed the Knights' scoring on his 30-yard touchdown reception from Jacobsmeier.
Domeyer finished the day with 48 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. Schrader was the team's leading rusher with 54 yards and also recorded 93 yards through the air with one touchdown.
Miller led the receivers with seven catches for 71 yards and one touchdown.
Wartburg Circuit Recap
Junior Spencer Capitani (Northwood) led the defense with his nine solo tackles. Senior Martin Hyatte (Rockwood, Ill.) had a team-best three tackles for a loss of 14 yards.
The Knights are off from competition next weekend but return to the field Saturday, Oct. 5 when they host Simpson at 1 p.m. to open Iowa Conference play.
