WAVERLY, Iowa-- Seniors Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls) and Taylor Jacobsmeier (Wapello) and freshman Jordan Cannon (Bolingbrook, Ill.) set new career bests in Wartburg's 90-89 double overtime win over Loras Wednesday. This was the first overtime game for the program since Jan. 30, 2010 when Wartburg fell to Central, 78-76 in one overtime.
Diemer finished with 24, Jacobsmeier and Cannon each had 19 and junior Dan Van Groningen (Oak Forest, Ill.) added 10.
The Knights led 41-33 at halftime until the Duhawks compiled a strong second half and tied it at 67 all with 3:16 to play. Loras made both of its free throw attempts to take a two-point lead which Cannon erased with his layup with 2:03 remaining.
Cannon made both of his free throws but the Duhawks answered with a layup to knot the score again at 71-71 with :51 on the clock. Loras took the two point lead as it made two more free throws which Diemer erased with his two charity shots to make the score 73-73 with 12 ticks left.
The Duhawks attempted a three-point shot which bounced off the rim and they were unable to attempt another shot as time expired to send the game to overtime.
In the first extra session, neither team led by more than two points. The game was tied for the ninth time at 80-80 with :43 left. Jacobsmeier scored a go-ahead layup with :31 to go but Loras answered wtih a bucket at :09 left to send it to an other overtime.
In the second overtime, Wartburg jumped to a 86-82 lead with 4:10 to go on consecutive baskets by Brett Ahlgren and Diemer.
The Duhawks hit a trey to slice the lead to one with 3:57 remaining and tied the score yet again on a free throw. Cannon made his two free throws to give the Knights the 88-86 lead with 2:38 left but that was erased yet again by a trey from the Duhawks' Alex Cline.
Loras led 89-88 with 1:24 left until Cannon fought through traffic to make his layup with :15 left to reclaim the lead at 90-89. The Duhawks attempted one final shot but senior Chris Thomas (Orlando) came down with the rebound to seal the win for Wartburg.
The Knights continue their three-game homestand Saturday when they host Buena Vista at 4 p.m.
