No. 6 Wartburg Leaps Past Luther, 52-7

Box Score
Video Highlights
WAVERLY, Iowa-- Sixth-ranked Wartburg moved to 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in Iowa Conference games in its 52-7 win Luther (4-3, 1-3) Saturday. This was the second-highest point total in the series history, as the most was 56 points in Wartburg's 56-28 win in 1992.

The Knights totaled 408 yards of offense to propel them to the victory.

The Orange and Black's defense held the Norse to 193 yards on the ground and zero yards through the air. This marked the fifth time in school history that Wartburg allowed zero passing yards as this previously occurred against Iowa Weselyan (1956), Buena Vista (1953), Luther (1965) and Lea (1969).

Junior Brandon Domeyer (Manchester) started the scoring frenzy on his five-yard touchdown run on the Knights' first drive of the game.

The teams traded possesions as each went three-and-out to give the Orange and Black the ball back on Luther's 30-yard line. Junior Michael Bohlke (Manchester) capped off the short scoring drive with his 27-yard field goal to make the score 10-0.

It was the Norse's ball to start the second quarter and they tried to convert on fourth and four at Wartburg's 33-yard line, but were unsuccesful to give the ball back to the Knights.

The Orange and Black scored as junior Logan Schrader (Killdeer, Ill.) threw two consecutive passes for over 30-yards as junior Mitch Rahm (Wesley) caught a 33-yard pass to end the two-play, 67-yard drive.

Wartburg's defense forced Luther deep in its own territory on Luther's next drive and then junior Nick Clasen (Maquoketa) forced a fumble on the three-yard line which classmate Will Jansen (Mediapolis) returned for the touchdown which brought the score to 24-0.

The Norse got the ball back but went three-and-out on the drive and was forced to punt. The kick went off a fellow Luther player's helmet which senior Taylor Hotek (Waterloo) returned for the 17-yard touchdown to make the score 31-0 with 7:56 left in the second quarter.

The teams traded possesions again on three three-and-outs until the Knights compiled an eight-plays, 81-yard drive as Domeyer scored his second touchdown of the day, this one for four-yards out to extend the lead to 38-0 at halftime.

On their first drive of the third quarter, senior Will Ebert (Polk City) caught a 25-yard pass from Schrader to increase the margin to 45-0.

Luther answered on its ensuing drive as the quarterback kept it for a six-yard score to make the score 45-7 with 8:08 to play in the quarter.

Freshman Brandon Richardson (Rock Island, Ill.) scored the final touchdown for the Orange and Black on his eight-yard carry with 1:03 remaining in the third.

Richardson had a team-high 38 yards on the ground and was closely followed by 34 from Domeyer.

Schrader finished 15-21-0 for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

Senior Taylor Jacobsmeier (Wapello) led all receivers with 106 yards.

Junior Gunner Tranel (Vinton) led the defense with 12 total tackles (eight solo, four assists).

Wartburg returns to the field next Saturday on the road against Buena Vista at 1 p.m.
