WAVERLY, Iowa-- Wartburg fell 9-5 and 8-4 to Dubuque Tuesday.
In the first game, the Spartans plated two in the second to be the first team on the scoreboard. Dubuque added one in the third and one in the fourth to make the score 4-0.
The Knights answered in the bottom of the inning as they knotted the game with four runs in the frame, including a two-run double from freshman Kirby Meyer (Charles City).
The Spartans plated the go-ahead run the top of the fifth and tallied four more runs in the seventh to make the score 9-4.
Junior Katie Wyman (Springville) drove in freshman Taylor Smola (Stevens Point, Wis.) for the final run of the first game.
Junior Britt Schoon (Waukee) led the team at the plate as she went 2-2.
In the finale, Dubuque took the early 1-0 lead in its first at-bats, but the Orange and Black answered to tie the score at one.
The Spartans scored two runs in the third and fourth innings to make the score 5-1. Dubuque tallied its final runs in the seventh on a three-run double.
Junior Amanda Hoeg (Traer) started Wartburg's rally in the bottom of the inning with her leadoff single and advanced to second as freshman Dani Gordon (Fairbank) grounded out. Freshman Nicci Roberts (Bettendorf) moved Hoeg to third as she beat the throw on her bunt single. Meyer drew a walk to load the bases with one out.
Junior Jess Brunko (Independence) drove in Hoeg on her groundout and Roberts and Meyer scored on Smola's double down the left side for the Knights' final three runs of the game.
Smola led the team at the plate as she went 2-4 with two RBIs.
The Orange and Black return to action Saturday on the road at Coe in a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m.
