Volleyball Sweeps Cornell, Upsets No. 2 UW-Stevens Point

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa-- The Wartburg volleyball team (9-1 overall) swept Cornell (6-2) Friday night in the first match of the Cornell Invite and upset No. 2 ranked UW-Stevens Point (7-1). This marked the best upset in program history over Top 25-ranked opponent. The previous best was a 3-2 win over then-No. 12 UW-Whitewater on 9/29/12.

The Knights won 25-16, 25-21 and 31-29 against the Rams and 24-26, 17-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-13 against the Pointers.

Senior Bailey Wilson (West Des Moines) had a team-best 16 kills and junior Emma Harmeyer (West Des Moines) had a team-high two service aces. Wilson also surpassed the 1,000 career kill mark in the match.

The Orange and Black were ahead 9-1 early in the first set and rallied from being down 5-1 to tied the score 12-12 in the second set. Wartburg rallied again to knot it at 16-16 and 17 all before building its lead.

In the final set, the Knights were down 6-3 but battled back to tie the score at 7-7, 8-8 and 12-12 before the Rams jumped to a 17-14 and 19-16 lead. The Orange and Black rallied to knot the set at 23, 24 and 25 all to send the game to extra points.

The score was tied three more times as Wartburg fought off set point three times.

A Cornell service error and a block from Krystal Graves and Kaity Brouwer sealed the sweep for the Knights.

Against UW-Stevens Point, Wilson had 14 kills while Graves and Brouwer each had 11.

The Pointers won the first two sets before the Knights claimed the next three-straight to seal the upset win.
