MINNEAPOLIS—The No. 17 Wartburg football team opened the season with a 40-3 win over Augsburg College Saturday night. This marked the most points the Knights have scored against the Auggies in the series' history as the previous mark was 38 set in the 38-14 win in 2006.

The Knights jumped to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter. Junior Brandon Domeyer (Manchester) scored his first touchdown of not only the season, but in the quarter, from three-yards out on the team's first drive, just under five minutes into the game. Senior Andrew Ganshirt (Dubuque) recovered the fumble on the Auggies' ensuing drive and the Orange and Black capitalized on that turnover with a 12-play, 48-yard drive capped by another three-yard scoring run from Domeyer to make the score 14-0.

After a three-and-out by Augsburg, Wartburg took advantage of the short field as senior Taylor Jacobsmeier (Wapello) threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to junior Robbie Anstoetter (Farley) as time expired in the first quarter.

The Knights later scored on their first drive of the second quarter as junior Logan Schrader (Killdeer, Ill.) threw a 30-yard pass to senior Will Ebert (Polk City) to bring the score to 27-0.

The Auggies got on the scoreboard just before halftime (3:44 left in the half) on a 39-yard field goal.

Schrader and Anstoetter connected on their second scoring play of the night on a seven-yard pass in the third quarter to extend the Orange and Black's lead to 33-3.

Augsburg was driving late in the third quarter as sophomore Sawyer Anderson (New Hampton) made an interception in the end zone to quell the threat.

After a Wartburg turnover early in the fourth quarter, the Auggies went three and out to give the Knights the ball back at the Augsburg 28-yard line with 10:38 to play.
The Orange and Black compiled a 10-play, 31-yard drive on the ground capped off by a six-yard touchdown run from sophomore Jake Haberman (Clarion) to make the score 40-3.

Wartburg's defense held Augsburg to only five yards on the ground.

Haberman was the leading rusher for the Knights as he had 16 carries for 75 yards. Domeyer followed with 60 yards and 15 carries and two touchdowns.

Schrader finished 14-20 with 215 passing yards, including a long of 48 and two touchdown passes.

Jacobsmeier was the leading receiver with 57 yards on two catches and Anstoetter had 44 yards on his two receptions.

Senior Zach Twedt (Atkins) led the defense with his seven tackles (five solo and two assists), which included 3.5 tackles for a loss of 31 yards. He also make four sacks for a loss of 31 yards.

The Orange and Black return to the field next Saturday when they host No. 7 Bethel in a 1 p.m. game.
