Box ScoreGRINNELL, Iowa-- Wartburg (1-0 overall) defeated Grinnell (2-1) 105-91 Tuesday night. This was the first loss of the season for the Pioneers and also snapped their four-game winning streak against the Knights.
This also marked the first time Wartburg had scored in triple digits since Nov. 20, 2009, when the Knights defeated Bethany Lutheran, 101-59.
Five Wartburg players finished in double digits and were led by 16 from sophomore Sam Stoveall (Aurora, Colo.). Classmate Nate Woeste (Atkins) and junior Nick Webber (Peosta) had 15 points, sophomore Bo Bader (Union) had 14 and junior Lenart Kalen (Skofja Loka, Slovenia) tallied 10.
Grinnell led 58-51 at halftime, but Wartburg outscored them 54-33 in the second frame to earn the win.
The score was tied four times in the second half, which included 87 all with 5:15 remaning. The Knights used a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to build their margin. In the second frame, Wartburg held the Pioneers to 21.7 % from three-point land.
The Orange and Black return to action Friday when they host Emmaus Bible at 8 p.m. in the opening round of the Buzz Levick Tournament.
