Softball Moves Winning Streak to Seven in Sweep over Webster

ST. LOUIS-- The Wartburg softball team (9-5 overall) moved its winning streak to seven with the sweep over Webster Saturday.

The Knights claimed the opener, 15-10, and the finale, 9-1.

In the first game, the Orange and Black jumped to a 11-0 lead after their third round of at-bats. Some of the scoring highlights included a three-run triple by sophomore Taylor Smola (Stevens Point, Wis.) in the first, a two-run double from freshman Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) in the third inning, which classmate Erica Countryman (Plainfield, Ill.) followed with an RBI single.

The Gorloks plated four in the third and fourth innings to bring the margin to three (11-8).

Wartburg added a run in the fifth and then sophomore Courtney Belk (Bettendorf) hit an RBI single and senior Britt Schoon (Waukee) drove in the final two runs with her two-run shot.

Sommer led the team as she went 4-5 and scored four runs.

In the finale, Schoon picked up right where she led off as she hit another two-run homer in the first to give the Knights the early lead once again. The Orange and Black extended their lead with one in the second and four in their third to make the score 7-0.

Webster got on the board with its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third. Wartburg scored its final two runs in the fourth and retired the Gorloks in order in the fourth and fifth to earn the run-rule victory and the sweep.

The Knights continue their three-stop roadtrip Sunday when they play Blackburn.
