Wartburg Upset No. 16 Augustana

MOLINE, Ill.-- The Wartburg softball team (17-6 overall) upset No. 16 Augustana (14-5-1) Sunday with its 2-1 win. This marked the first win over a Top 25 opponent since the 3-2 win over then-No. 14 Central on April 7, 2009.

The Knights were the first team on the board as they scored a run in the third as junior Micaela Forsyth (Charles City) scored on freshman Kristie Sommer's (Cedar Rapids) sacrifice fly.

The Vikings evened the score in the bottom of the frame on a fielder's choice.

The score remained 1-1 until Sommer hit a homerun over the left field fence to take the 2-1 lead.

Augustana had one batter reach base on a single in the bottom of the seventh, but the Orange and Black sealed the win on a game-ending double play.

The game against Ripon Sunday morning was cancelled due to weather.

Wartburg returns to the field Tuesday as it travels to face Dubuque in its Iowa Conference opener.
