Spartans Hit Walkoff in First Game, Knights' Late Rally Falls Short in Finale

DUBUQUE, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (17-8 overall, 0-2 IIAC) fell 3-2 and 8-6 to Dubuque (10-12, 2-0) Tuesday.

In the first game, junior Micaela Forsyth (Charles City) hit a two-run double to right centerfield to give the Knights the lead in the second inning. The Spartans scored one in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly and tied the score in the sixth on an RBI single.

Dubuque won the first game on a walkoff double.

In the finale, the Spartans were the first team on the board with three runs in the first and scored one in the third on a dropped third strike.

The Orange and Black sliced the margin to one as they scored two runs on an error and a passed ball.

UD added a run in the fourth and fifth to make the score 6-2. They tallied their final two runs in the sixth on a groundout and RBI single.

Wartburg compiled a rally in the seventh as freshman Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) scored when the bases were loaded and senior Britt Schoon (Waukee) was hit by a pitch. Then, Smola drove in freshman Erica Countryman (Plainfield, Ill.), classmate Jocelyn Keller (Rolfe) crossed the plate on sophomore Kirby Meyer's (Charles City) groundout and freshman Kennedy Haut (Plainfield) scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, the next two batters were retired to end the rally.

Smola went 2-2 at the plate.

The Knights return to the field Thursday when they host UW-Platteville in a twinbill at 4 p.m.
