WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team fell 5-1 and 12-4 in six innings Saturday to Coe.
In the first game, the Kohawks took the 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI double. The Knights sliced the margin in half in the bottom of the frame as sophomore Taylor Smola (Stevens Point, Wis.) scored on a fielding error.
Coe plated one in the third on a solo homerun and two in the fifth on a homerun and an RBI single.
Smola and classmate Courtney Belk (Bettendorf) each went 2-3.
In the finale, the Kohawks jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first, but the Orange and Black answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double from junior Micaela Forsyth (Charles City) and scored as the next batter, Smola, drove her in on a single to centerfield.
Coe scored three in the third and one in the fourth to make the score 11-2. Freshman Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) drove in the final two runs for Wartburg in the fifth on her double to left field.
The Kohwaks tallied one in their sixth and the Knights attempted to compile a rally as they had bases loaded with one out, but the next two batters were retired to give the sweep to Coe.
Smola went a perfect 3-3 at the plate.
Wartburg returns to action next Saturday on the road against Buena Vista.
