WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (21-16 overall, 2-10 IIAC) swept Loras (16-18, 3-9) Tuesday. The Knights claimed the opener 7-5 and won the finale on a walkoff homerun by sophomore Taylor Smola (Stevens Point, Wis.). This also marked the first 20-win season for the program since 2009.
In the first game, the Orange and Black took the early 4-0 lead in the first on an RBI double from junior Micaela Forsyth (Charles City) and a three-run homer from Smola and added a run in the second and fourth, again on RBI singles from Smola.
The Duhawks got on the board with a run in the fifth and Wartburg matched that run in the bottom of the frame to take the 6-1 lead. Loras tallied three runs in the sixth and its final run in the seventh.
Smola finished a perfect 3-3 with a career-best five RBIs and freshman Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) went 3-4. Senior Paige Blom (Reasnor) pitched the complete game to earn her 12th win in the circle.
In the nightcap, the Duhawks took the early 2-0 lead in their first, but the Knights plated three in their first as Smola continued to have a hot bat with her two-run double to make it 3-2.
Loras added four in the third and the Orange and Black plated two in the inning on an RBI double from senior Britt Schoon (Waukee) and a sac fly by senior Katie Wyman (Springville) which made it 6-5.
In the sixth, Wartburg tied the game on an RBI single up the middle from Ka. Sommer. In the top of the seventh, the Duhawks had a runner on third, but was left stranded as the next two batters grounded out.
Smola sealed the sweep with her walkoff homerun over the left field fence as she was the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the seventh.
