Knights Drop Two to No. 4 Norse

DECORAH, Iowa-- The fourth-ranked Luther softball team (27-1 overall, 6-0 IIAC) took both games in the doubleheader against Wartburg (19-12, 0-6) Wednesday. The Norse claimed the opener, 15-4 in six innings on a walkoff grand slam and the finale, 12-6.

In the first game, the Knights took the early 4-0 lead in the second which included a two-run single by freshman Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids). Luther cut the margin in half with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame and then took the lead in the next inning on another two-run shot and an RBI double to make the score 5-4.

Luther plated three in the fourth and sealed the win with seven runs in the sixth, which included the walk-off grand slam.

Sophomore Kirby Meyer (Charles City) finished a perfect 3-3 at the plate.

In the final game, junior Micaela Forsyth (Charles City) helped the Orange and Black to the early lead again with her solo homerun in the second inning. The Norse rallied once again and scored nine in the bottom of the inning.

Meyer drove in freshman Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) in the top of the fourth and then senior Katie Wyman (Springville) slugged a three-run homerun to right field to make the score 9-5. Luther added one run in the frame and Ka. Sommer scored on twin sister Kristie's RBI groundout in the top of the fifth to make it 10-6.

The Norse plated their final two runs in the fifth on another two-run homer.

Wartburg returns to the field Saturday when they host Coe in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
