WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg men's basketball team (1-0) defeated the Grinnell Pioneers (0-1) on Tuesday, 126-100.
In their season debut, the Knights broke the program's single-game assist record, tallying 42 assists. That surpasses the previous record of 38 set against Grinnell in 2004.
Junior Nate Woeste (Atkins) tied Wartburg's single-game assist record, earning eight assists. He is now tied with Mitchell Murphy at the top of the list. In addition, Woeste was a leading scorer of the game with 23 points, making 11 of 12 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) also added 23 points and had six assists. Senior Jordan Cannon (Bolingbrook, Ill.) followed with 22 points. Other Knights who scored double digits include sophomore Josh Gehling (Dyersville), a perfect 7 for 7 from the field, for 14 points and junior Clifton Brown (Mims, Fla.) who scored 14 as well.
Cannon and senior Nick Webber (Peosta) each added seven assists.
The Knights led over the Pioneers 52 to 37 at half and they maintained their lead until the final buzzer.
Wartburg will return to action to host the Buzz Levick Tournament this Friday at 8 p.m.
