WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg football team (5-4 overall, 4-3 IIAC) narrowly fell 28-27 in overtime to Luther (3-6, 2-5) Saturday. This was the Norse's first win in Waverly since 1986, snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Knights in the series and was the first overtime game for the Orange and Black since 2011. This also halted Wartburg's 17-game home winning streak which dated back to Nov. 2, 2013 vs. Coe.



On the first drive of the game, Wartburg had a field goal blocked and then its defense responded with a huge goal line stop on Luther's ensuing drive.

The Knights got on the scoreboard on its first possession of the second quarter and the Norse evened the game later in the frame. With 29 seconds left in the first half, Luther capitalized on a turnover to take the 13-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Norse had the ball to start the third quarter and compiled a 10-play, 75-yard drive to increase their lead to 20-7. The Orange and Black responded on their next drive and knotted the game at 20-20 as sophomore Peyton Imhoff (Dubuque) intercepted a pass which set up a nine-play, 48-yard scoring drive capped off by a one-yard touchdown from senior Jake Haberman (Clarion).

Neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.

Wartburg was the first team to have the ball in the extra session and scored on a seven-yard run from junior Connor Schrader (Lake Zurich, Ill.) and the PAT was good to make it 27-20.

Luther then got its chance to respond. The Norse scored on a 16-yard run and successfully completed the two-point conversion to seal the win.

The Knights return to the field next Saturday when they host Buena Vista at 1 p.m. in the annual Senior Day.
