Knights Score 67 in Second Half, Stun No. 10 Blugolds

WAVERLY, Iowa -- The Wartburg men's basketball team (8-1 overall) shocked No. 10 UW-Eau Claire (8-1) on Sunday 103-90.

After a quiet first half for the Knights, UW-Eau Claire led 45-36. Wartburg turned it on in the second half, hitting .727 from field-goal range, .625 from behind the arc and .737 at the free throw line to score 67 points in the final 20 minutes of the contest. Wartburg also out-rebounded the towering Blugolds' team 28 to 27.


The victory marks the second upset for the Orange and Black over a ranked opponent. Their first came after beating then No. 21 UW-Oshkosh at the Buzz Levick Tournament in November. This was the third-highest ranked opponent Wartburg upset in program history.

Senior Jordan Cannon (Bolingbrook, Ill.) was the top-scorer of the game with 23 points. Cannon also had a team-high nine rebounds. Junior Nate Woeste (Atkins) added 20 points, hitting four three-points, and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore Jaran Sabus (Urabandale) tacked on 14 points for the Knights and sophomore Josh Gehling (Dyersville) scored 11. Sophomore Cam Kickbush (Reinbeck) and senior Nick Webber (Peosta) rounded out the leading offense, with ten points each.

Senior Lenart Kalan (Skofja Loka, Slovenia) and junior Clifton Brown (Mims, Fla.) both recorded a team-high three assists. 

Wartburg's next competition will be in Fort Lauderdale at the Cruzin Classic, beginning Monday, December 19.
