CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Wartburg men's basketball team (7-1 overall, 2-1 IIAC) beat Coe (4-3, 2-1) on Wednesday 70-66.
With four lead changes and three ties during the first half, the Kohawks led 37-29 after the first 20 minutes of play. The Orange and Black returned in the second half and led by eleven points with 9:32 remaining in the contest. Coe was able to get within four points with 24 second left in the game, but two free-throws made by senior Nick Webber (Peosta) put Wartburg up by four, which was the advantage at the final buzzer.
The Knights topped all three shooting percentage categories (FG, 3FG FT) over the Kohawks.
Senior Jordan Cannon (Bolingbrook, Ill.) led the way for the Knights, scoring a game-high 18 points and recording seven rebounds. Junior Nate Woeste (Atkins) also nabbed the team-high seven rebounds on the night. Webber (Peosta) was the other teammate to earn double-digits with 11 points. Junior Sawyer Herman (Monticello) and sophomore Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) each chipped in seven points.
A victory over Coe is the second Iowa Conference win in addition to beating Nebraska Wesleyan last week. A 2-1 IIAC start ties the Knights for second place in the standings behind 2-0 Simpson.
In Wartburg's next contest, the team will look to stay undefeated at Levick Arena this season when they host #10 UW-Eau Claire on Sunday at 3 p.m.
