MENOMONIE, Wis.-- The Wartburg softball team (12-20 overall) won the first game of the doubleheader with UW-Stout (12-14) 7-0, but fell 2-1 in the finale.
In the opener, the Knights took the 1-0 lead in the third as they capitalized on two Blue Devil fielding errors and extended their margin with four runs in the fifth, which included a two-run single by sophomore Mara Forysth (Charles City). The Orange and Black plated a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to complete the win.
Defensively, Wartburg allowed only two UW-Stout players past first base as both advanced to second on stolen bases.
Forysth and freshman Hannah Blaske (Bettendorf) each went 2-4 at the plate while sophomore Kimberly Wedeking (Clarksville) pitched her 12th complete game of the season.
The second game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Forsyth hit a solo home run to center field. The Blue Devils scored both of their runs in the sixth on RBI groundouts. In the seventh, freshman Kailee O'Brien (Altoona) hit a leadoff single, was sacrificed to second, stole third but the rally effort was halted as the next batters struck out and grounded out. Forsyth and Wedeking each went 2-3.
The Knights return to the field Tuesday when they host No. 2 Luther at 3 p.m.
