WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (8-14 overall) took both games of the doubleheader against Grinnell as it won 8-7 and 9-6 Sunday.
In the first game, the Knights took the early 4-0 lead in the first as sophomore Mara Forysth (Charles City) drove in classmate Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) on her double to centerfield. The next batter, sophomore Kimberly Wedeking (Clarksville) slugged a three-run home run over the fence in right centerfield. The Orange and Black added to their lead in the next inning as they scored three runs on as many hits to make the score 7-0.
The Pioneers plated two in the third and Wartburg added one in the fourth on an RBI double from Wedeking. She had five RBIs in this game, just two shy of the single-game school record.
Grinnell compiled a late rally with one run in the sixth and four in the seventh and looked to tie the game as it had a runner on second with one out. The next batter hit a grounder to Sommer at short, which she threw to first for the force out and then Forsyth threw it to third for the 635 double play to earn the win.
In the finale, the Pioneers took the 1-0 lead in the first. Once again, the Knights compiled a big inning with five runs in the second which included a leadoff home run by freshman Hannah Blaske (Bettendorf).
