Knights Split with Dutch to Solidify Spot in IIAC Tournament

Forsyth hit the game-winning three-run homer Sunday.
PELLA, Iowa-- Wartburg split its doubleheader with Central Sunday and solidified its seed in the Iowa Conference tournament this Friday. The Dutch won the opener, 7-2, but the Knights captured the finale, 5-4.

In the first game, the Orange and Black took the 1-0 lead in the first on a bases loaded walk before Central used a seven-run third inning to take the 7-1 lead.

Sophomore Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) scored the final run of the game in the sixth as she scored on freshman Madison Rentschler's (Marion) double to right centerfield.

Sophomore Erica Countryman (Plainfield, Ill.) went 3-3 at the plate.

In the finale, the Dutch plated two in their second and Wartburg answered with two in the third on RBI singles from freshmen Hannah Blaske (Bettendorf) and Brenna Gray (Waterloo). Central scored its final two runs in the fourth as it stole home and scored on a throwing error.

Sophomore Mara Forsyth (Charles City) won the game for the Knights on her three-run home run in the sixth inning as the game was called due to darkness.

Gray and Countryman each went 3-3 at the dish. Gray also went the distance in the circle to earn the win.

The Orange and Black earned the six seed in the conference tournament and will face Buena Vista at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Decorah as Luther is the host.
