Wartburg Advances to IIAC Tournament Semifinal Game

Forsyth was 3-4 in the conference tournament game.
DECORAH, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (18-23 overall) advanced to the Iowa Conference Tournament semifinal game in its 7-2 win over Buena Vista Friday and will face Simpson, the number two seed, Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The Knights are now 12-2 in the conference tournament since it was re-started in 2006.

The Orange and Black were the first team on the scoreboard as sophomore Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) scored on classmate Mara Forsyth's (Charles City) groundout to take the early 1-0 lead.

This remained the score until the fourth inning when Forsyth scored on an error by the catcher who threw the ball into left field trying to get her out at third base.

BV tied it in the fifth on an RBI single and a fielding error. Wartburg broke out the bats in its next at-bat as all nine players came to the plate in the frame. The Knights scored four runs on five hits which included three doubles in a row.

Forsyth accounted for the final run of the game with her solo home run in the seventh as she finished 3-4, just a triple shy of the cycle.

Junior Kimberly Wedeking (Clarksville) pitched the complete game to earn the win.
