Strong Second Half Propels Knights Past Prairie Wolves

Box Score
LINCOLN, Neb.-- The Wartburg football team (1-1 overall, 1-0 IIAC) used a strong second half to earn its first Iowa Conference win of the season in the 38-28 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan (1-2, 0-1). This also marked head coach Rick Willis' 150th career victory.

The Prairie Wolves scored on their first possesion of the game and capitalized on a return on a blocked kick to take the 14-0 lead in the first quarter. After two subsequent field goals, the Knights got on the scoreboard on junior Connor Schrader's (Lake Zurich, Ill.) first touchdown of the day from two-yards out with 6:20 to play in the first half.

After heading into the locker room trailing 20-10, sophomore Matt Sacia (Eldridge) connected with junior Riley Brockway (Postville) for an 18-yard touchdown pass to make the score 20-17 with 7:18 to go in the third.

An interception by junior Hunter Baldus (Cedar Rapids) gave Wartburg the ball back on NWU's 47-yard line. The Knights drove down the field and scored on another Sacia to Brockway pass, this one for 35-yards to take the 24-20 lead which they did not relinquish.

After Schrader had his second touchdown run of the day to make it 31-20, junior Tony Anstoetter (Farley) intercepted a Prairie Wolf pass which the Orange and Black capitalized on once more as Sacia found junior Griffin Brennecke (Marion) for a 27-yard score which made the score 38-20.

NWU scored on its ensuing drive and were successful on the two-point conversion for the final score of the game. Senior Carter Funke () made an interception with 1:25 left to which Wartburg went into victory formation to seal the win.

Schrader and Brockway each had two scores as they finished with 165 and 168 yards, respectively. Sacia was 21-37-1 for 344 yards and three TD passes. Senior Sawyer Anderson (New Hampton) led the defense with his nine total tackles.
