WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 8/14 Wartburg women's basketball team opened the season 1-0 with its 96-40 win over Iowa Wesleyan (0-3) Tuesday. A trio of Knights finished in double digits as senior Miranda Murphy (Alleman) led all scorers with 15, classmate Abbie Haupert (Collins) had a career-high 14 and senior Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) had 12. Murphy tied her career-best with three treys in the game.
Every player that dressed for the Orange and Black saw playing time. Wartburg narrowly missed setting a new school record as it finished .950 from the free throw line, just missing the record of .952 set at Coe on Dec. 7, 2016.
The Knights opened the evening on a 18-0 run over the first seven minutes and never looked back. They led by as many as 59 late in the game.
The Orange and Black held all team advantages and held the Tigers to .308 from behind the three-point line.
Wartburg returns to the court Saturday at the North Park Invitational against Elmhurst at 4 p.m.
