CHICAGO-- The No. 8/14 Wartburg women's basketball team moved to 2-0 Saturday in its 67-59 win over Elmhurst (1-2) at the North Park Tournament. Senior Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) led all scorers with 16 points and added nine rebounds. She now needs three points to become the program's 12th member of the 1,000 career point club.
Classmate Miranda Murphy (Alleman) joined her in double digits with 14 points and added two blocks.
The Knights trailed 12-7 at the end of the first quarter. They compiled a 10-5 run over the first five and a half minutes of the second to knot the score at 17 all. The Orange and Black used a 7-2 run over the next three minutes to take the lead for good, as they led 29-21 at halftime.
The Bluejays outscored them 20-15 in the third quarter, but were unable to overtake the margin.
Wartburg held the team advantage in rebounds, including on the offensive end, 13-8.
The Knights will face host-North Park Sunday at 2 p.m.
