SANTA CRUZ, Calif.-- Senior Aryn Jones (Marion) had her first double double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds in No. 4/11 Wartburg's 53-50 win over California Lutheran (5-3 overall) Wednesday.
The Regals' last second three-point attempt was unsuccessful, as the Knights remain undefeated on the season at 9-0.
Senior Miranda Murphy (Alleman) led all scorers with 13 points and classmate Morgan Neuendorf (Plainfield) completed those in double digits with 10.
Senior Megan Murphy (Alleman) and freshman Kaitlyn Volesky (Mount Vernon) each scored six points, as Murphy was a perfect 2-2 behind the arc.
The Orange and Black led by two at the end of the first quarter (12-10), while both teams scored 11 in the second and 16 in the third, which made it 39-37 going into the final quarter.
Cal Lutheran built its lead to 50-46 with 3:04 to play on consecutive treys. Wartburg battled back on a layup by Neuendorf, a three from Murphy, and a layup from senior Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) to take the 53-50 lead with 0:21 to go.
The last second shot attempt did not go in which sealed the win for the Knights.
For their efforts, Murphy was named Tournament MVP and Sommer was named to the All-Tournament team.
This marks the third time the program has started the season 9-0 under head coach Bob Amsberry, and second-straight season.
The Orange and Black return to the court next Friday, Dec. 29 at their own annual Holiday Tournament against UW-Superior at 2 p.m.
