LAS VEGAS, Nev.--The No. 13 Wartburg men's basketball team (9-2 overall) fell to Augsburg (8-2), 68-64 Saturday in their final game at the D3hoops Classic.
With the loss, the Knights' nine-game win streak came to a hault. Wartburg was on a win streak since their season opener loss at UNI on Nov. 15.
In the first half, the Orange and Black led twice at 19:50 and 18:47. The Auggies would take control and lead by as many as nine in the same frame.
At halftime, Augsburg led Wartburg by three, 28-25.
The Auggies led for most of the second half, until Wartburg took its third lead of the game at 3:50. The Knights led the Auggies for the remainder of the second half, until Augsburg tied the game at 64 with 53 seconds left.
Augsburg would go on a four-point run, keeping the Knights scoreless in the final minute. Wartburg was narrowly outscored in the second half, 40-39.
On offense for Wartburg, senior Sawyer Herman (Monticello) and junior Jaran Sabus (Urbandale) each netted 23 points. Herman's 23 points were just three shy of a career high. Sabus had a team-high four assists.
Defensively, Sabus also led the team in rebounds with seven. Senior Nate Woeste (Atkins) had six, with Herman tallying five. Freshman Max Smith Drahos (Cedar Rapids) had a team-best three steals.
Sabus was named to the All-Tournament team.
